STEP-BY-STEP PLAN
Appointment
If you make an appointment you can nearly always count on Dr. Karim receiving you within 2 weeks.
Letter of authorization from your insurance company
In order to claim reimbursement from your health insurance (if you have one), you will need a letter of prior authorization.
Operation
The procedure can usually be performed within two weeks of the admission interview.
Rest
After surgery, you should relax for one week.
Checkup
One week after the surgery you will come back for us to see your progress and remove the stitches.
Checkups
After the stitches have been removed, we will ask your dermatologist to do more tests.
Before the operation
Drugs
Do you use blood-thinning drugs? Please let us know if you do. Ask the doctor from whom you get the prescription and find out if you can temporarily stop treatment. Your doctor will tell you how many days before the operation you should or can stop taking the blood-thinning drug. Dr. Karim wants to ensure this is possible in order to avoid unnecessary risks.
Disease
Fever or flu the day before the operation? Contact Dr. Karim to decide if the operation can be performed or should be postponed.
Cosmetics and personal care products
We understand that you always want to look your best, but on the day of surgery you cannot use skin care products or makeup.
Alcohol
You may feel nervous about the operation, but you can’t drink alcohol the day before (or on the day itself, of course!)! Drinking alcohol increases the chances of subsequent bleeding of the wound.
During the operation
Prior signing of the consent form
Anaesthesia
Cleaning and preparation of sterile area
Removal of the tumour from the skin and sending it for pathological examination
Stitching
Operation time: About 30 min
After the operation
Pain
The treated area can be painfull the first 24 hours.
Water
Do not expose the wound to water for the first 24 hours.
Drugs
If necessary, you can take two 500 mg paracetamol tablets four times a day.
Mobility
Take at least one week rest and avoid overexertion, such as bending over and lifting heavy objects.
Stitching
The stitches will be removed after a week
Scar cream
Four weeks after the operation, you can start applying a few smears of scar cream.
Risks
Bleeding
Very rare. The bruise will disappear in a few days.
Infection of the wound
Very rare
Poor healing
In exceptional cases, patients have poor healing. This situation can be remedied after six months.
Opening of the wound
The wound may open when the bandage or the stitching is removed too soon. So leave it on until the follow-up appointment.
Results
During the first three months, the scar may be swollen and red. After six months, the scar takes on its permanent shape and colour.
