Flap ears

The frame of your face makes a lot of difference.

Hairstyles, (sun) glasses, earrings … You choose that with care. Because they are the frame of your face. They complete the picture. In addition, ears can distract attention. Doctor Karim can put ears in a position where the face comes into its own.

STEP-BY-STEP PLAN

Appointment
You make an appointment for an intake interview with Dr. Karim. In it we discuss your wishes. This conversation can usually take place within two weeks.

Operation
The procedure can usually take place within two weeks after the intake interview.

Peace
After the procedure you will receive a turban for a week and you will be rested for two weeks. Recovering an operation is important, give yourself the time and the rest to recover!

Check
You will return two weeks after the procedure so that we can see how you are doing and, if necessary, remove stitches.

Final check
Three months after the operation, we would like to see you for a final inspection. We check whether everything has been properly repaired and whether you are happy with the end result.

Before the operation

Travel
Because you cannot drive home after an operation (no car or bicycle), it is important to make travel arrangements.

Drugs
Do you use blood-thinning drugs? Please let us know if you do. Ask the doctor from whom you get the prescription and find out if you can temporarily stop treatment. Your doctor will tell you how many days before the operation you should or can stop taking the blood-thinning drug. Dr. Karim wants to ensure this is possible in order to avoid unnecessary risks.

Disease
Fever or flu the day before the operation? Contact Dr. Karim to decide if the operation can be performed or should be postponed.

Cosmetics and personal care products
We understand that you always want to look your best, but on the day of surgery you cannot use skin care products or makeup.

Alcohol
You may feel nervous about the operation, but you can’t drink alcohol the day before (or on the day itself, of course!)! Drinking alcohol increases the chances of subsequent bleeding of the wound.

During the operation

Usually under general anaesthetic

Pen mark at the back of the ear

Open the skin

Correction of the cartilage that changes the position of the ear

Removal of excess skin

Stitching

Operating time: about 1 hour

After the operation

Turban
Your ears will be covered with a turban, which you can remove yourself after a few days.

Hair band
When the turban is removed, you must wear a hair band or bandage at night.

Water
The wounds may get wet when the turban is fremoved, after a few days.

Pain
Your ears (and the sorrounding area) will be painful the first few days. This lasts for a maximum of two weeks. During these two weeks you will be calm to recover from the operation. Give yourself the time and rest to recover!

Drugs
If you wish, you can take two 500 mg paracetamol tablets four times a day.

Stitches
The stitches are reabsorbed.

Physical activity
Avoid overexertion, such as bending over or lifting heavy object.

Risks

Safe intervention
A flap ear correction is a safe procedure, especially in experienced hands.

General operating risks
Nabloeding, infection, fluid retention, thromboembolism, delayed wound healing and unsightly scarring.

Opening the wound
The wound may open when the patches or sutures are removed prematurely. Leave the patches and stitches until the check-up appointment.

Results

A flap ear correction gives a lasting result; after about a year it can be judged definitively.

Symmetry
As with any double-sided surgery, perfect symmetry can not be guaranteed. Fortunately, because in nature nothing is perfectly symmetrical.
